About

Rogers building on FSU campus

Welcome to the Florida State University Department of Statistics. Since its founding in 1959 as Florida’s first statistics department, it has continued to evolve and expand, adding biostatistics master’s and doctoral programs in the mid-2000s and a data science degree a decade later. It remains the only statistics department in the state to offer graduate degrees in statistics, biostatistics and data science.

The department’s strong undergraduate program awards a bachelor's degree in statistics, and undergraduate majors will soon have the opportunity to tailor their B.S. curriculum with a new data science track as well as a university certificate in statistical data science.

FSU statistics is a large and active department with well over 100 graduate students, nearly 200 undergraduates and 35 faculty and staff. Over time, it’s grown from occupying one-and-a-quarter floors of our current building to now controlling five floors of classrooms, study rooms, Zoom studios, break and study rooms, faculty offices and meeting spaces, and a visualization laboratory.

Award-winning departmental faculty have been elected and appointed fellows in prestigious professional statistical societies. In addition, faculty and students actively research important problems in a variety of areas including network analysis, Bayesian analysis, biostatistics, machine learning and AI, and nonparametric statistics. Faculty research has been recognized with significant external funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, among many others. More information on individual faculty and their research areas can be found on our People page.

Our excellent staff keep our programs running smoothly: tracking graduation, handling scheduling and course offerings, providing program advising, and being a first stop for questions from our students. To learn more about our staff and their specialties, visit our Staff page.

We invite prospective undergraduate and graduate students to explore our website and learn more about the department, distinguished faculty and academic degree programs. Alumni can enjoy seeing what’s changed throughout the years and what’s remained familiar.

Finally, please consider supporting the Department of Statistics. Your contributions help provide scholarships and travel awards for students, bring distinguished speakers to campus, and advance the department’s teaching and research mission. To learn more, please visit give.fsu.edu.
